Some Hippos, A Picnic and A Crocodile (Masai Mara, Kenya)

Maybe you were thinking, I thought they went there to see the Wildebeest migration? Well, yes that's true. But as it turns out, its quite difficult to see. First, there are water hazards, like crocodiles and hippos! Second, there are people hazards. The guides are generally supportive of one another, so while we rarely saw any other tourists on our trip, on the day we went to the river -- we saw enough to make up for all the other days combined!

Here's the day: we woke late (well, Kenyan late), had a leisurely breakfast at camp and then set out for a day around the river and a picnic lunch! Our goal? The migration! Return to camp around four o'clock!

Here's the day for the wildebeests: Get a bunch of your friends, go the river, stare longingly at the yummy grass on the other side of the river, send a dumb friend (or perhaps someone you don't like) to the river to scope out the conditions. Decide the conditions are okay (i.e. no predator hazard), start down to the river, and then go running back up the bank because there are a million tourists and their jeep lining the other side of the river and you know you won't be able to get across or get out of the water once you get to the other side! Repeat!

The day for the hippos: Have a swim, have a snack and sleep in the sun! Repeat!

And now for the cute picnic pics! Me and the hippos!
